# Part 2: Your first 90 days

## Organizing your first 90 days

 Part 2

Before you can teach, research, or contribute, you need to get set up. Most steps are the same for everyone — a few differ depending on whether you're paid by a hospital or by Harvard. Those differences are noted inline.

### Claim or activate your HarvardKey → expand\_more

Your master login for nearly all Harvard systems, including email, PeopleSoft, and the CV Generator. Set this up first; later steps depend on it.

### Get your Harvard ID (HUID) → expand\_more

Needed for building access, the Countway Library, and campus services.

### Set up benefits, payroll, and direct deposit → expand\_more

Connect with your appropriate Human Resources department to enroll in benefits and set up payroll and direct deposit. For Affiliate-based Faculty *(paid by your hospital)*, that's your hospital's HR. For Basic and Social Science (Quad) Faculty *(paid by Harvard)*, that's Harvard HR. Your HR department will guide enrollment.

### Confirm your HMS PeopleSoft record → expand\_more

All faculty have an HMS PeopleSoft record; it syncs to Harvard Catalyst Profiles and HMS directories, so keeping it current is what makes your appointment show up correctly across HMS systems.

> **Affiliate-based Faculty — a common mix-up.** You also have a *separate* PeopleSoft account at your hospital. The two are not connected: updating your hospital's PeopleSoft does **not** update your HMS record, and vice versa. When the instructions here refer to PeopleSoft, they mean your **HMS** PeopleSoft — confirm and update that one directly.

### Create your HMS CV Generator account → expand\_more

The standardized Faculty of Medicine CV you'll use for reappointment and promotion. Start it early so it's ready when you need it.

### If you're Affiliate-based Faculty → One more step: hospital onboarding expand\_more

Complete your affiliate hospital onboarding. Your affiliate hospital has its own onboarding process that runs parallel to your HMS appointment. Credentialing for clinical privileges can take several weeks — start early.

### If you're Basic and Social Science (Quad) Faculty → Two more steps: HMS email and VPN expand\_more

You have a primary appointment in a Basic or Social Science department on the Quad, and your paycheck comes from Harvard rather than a hospital. In addition to the steps above, you'll receive an **hms.harvard.edu email** and will need to [**set up an HMS VPN**](https://it.hms.harvard.edu/service/vpn) to reach internal systems off-campus.
