Each fall, the Shore Program hosts a special reception to honor award recipients alongside deans, families, friends, mentors, and peers. The Harvard Medical School award is named in tribute to a distinguished faculty member or staff who has made significant contributions to early-career faculty development.

**Harvard Medical School Award Honoree**

Maxine Milstein served as Program Director of the Office of Faculty Development at Boston Children’s Hospital for 18 years. Throughout her tenure, she championed the advancement of early-career faculty and played a pivotal role in strengthening mentorship across the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine communities. As a key contributor to the CHAD Mentorship Workshop, she provided guidance and structure that have shaped the professional growth of countless faculty members. Her leadership and advocacy have left a lasting impact on thousands of HMS and HSDM faculty, enriching the culture of mentorship and academic development across the institution.

Dr. Frederick H. Lovejoy, Jr., MD, holds the William Berenberg Distinguished Professorship of Pediatrics and serves as Associate Physician-in-Chief, Chair for Education, and Deputy Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, as well as at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Lovejoy has served as the long-serving chair of the Pediatrics Executive Committee and in this role has been an advocate for early-career faculty and award-winning mentor, teacher, and leader.

**Carol K. Bates, MD**  
**Harvard Medical School Award Honoree**

Carol K. Bates, a stalwart in the realms of medicine and academia, exemplifies an extraordinary career of dedication and influence. Her role as the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at Harvard Medical School from 2011 to 2023 underscores her extensive experience and remarkable contributions. Dr. Bates was the driving force behind the Promotions, Reappointments, and Appointments (P&amp;R) and Longer Service Committees, which facilitated nearly 4,000 promotions to assistant and associate professor roles, highlighting her pivotal role in faculty development. With her roots as a primary care practitioner at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center since 1988, she brought a unique clinical perspective to promotion metrics and evaluations. Beyond her administrative duties, Dr. Bates prioritized inclusivity in recruitment processes for new faculty members and collaborated with faculty development offices across affiliated institutions. Her commitment to equity was palpable, as she led initiatives in diversity, equity, and inclusion, served as the Title IX Coordinator for HMS faculty, and was instrumental in fostering gender equity efforts nationally. Dr. Carol K. Bates' legacy extends far beyond numbers, leaving an indelible mark on faculty development, mentorship, and leadership, not only at Harvard Medical School but throughout the broader academic and medical community.

**Orah S. Platt, MD**  
**Harvard Medical School Award Honoree**

Dr. Platt is Professor of Pediatrics Emerita at Boston Children’s Hospital. She received her MD degree from Harvard Medical School and trained in pediatrics at MGH followed by a hematology oncology fellowship at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Children's Hospital. She began her faculty career as an instructor and advanced to become the 55th female professor at HMS in 1997. As an NIH funded investigator, her research focused on the pathophysiology, epidemiology, and experimental therapeutics of sickle cell anemia and on membrane protein alterations in abnormal red cells. She also held several clinical leadership roles at Boston Children’s, including as medical director of the hematology clinic, the hematology laboratory, and ultimately of the department of laboratory medicine. She held important leadership roles in medical student and fellowship education culminating in her 22 years of leadership of the William Bosworth Castle Society, a role critically important for medical students’ education and well-being. Her leadership extended to her critical advisory role to Deans of Harvard Medical School from 2000 to 2022 as Boston Children’s representative on the Council of Academic Deans.

**Robert Barbieri, MD**  
**Harvard Medical School Award Honoree**

Robert L. Barbieri is Kate Macy Ladd Distinguished Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology and former Chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He is currently serving as the BWH Chief of Obstetrics. He specializes in infertility, reproductive surgery, and OB/GYN. His clinical interests include endometriosis, hirsutism, menopause, and menstrual abnormalities. He is editor-in-chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UpToDate.

**Lynne M. Reid, MD**  
**Harvard Medical School Award Honoree**

Dr. Lynne M. Reid is the S. Burt Wolbach Professor of Pathology, Emeritus at Harvard Medical School. After training in Australia, she moved to London and was the first person to serve as Dean of the Cardiothoracic Institute at London University. She came to Harvard in 1976 as Head of the Department of Pathology at Boston Children’s Hospital. Her research interests included lung growth and how it is affected by childhood diseases including cystic fibrosis, scoliosis, and respiratory distress syndrome. She also studied chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and pediatric pulmonary and arterial hypertension. The Lynne M. Reid papers are at Countway Library in the Archives for Women in Medicine. Dr. Reid has generously made personal donations to the fellowship program on a nearly annual basis since the start of the program.

**Nancy J. Tarbell, MD**  
**Harvard Medical School Award Honoree**

Dr. Nancy Tarbell served as Dean for Academic and Clinical Affairs from 2008 to 2019. She is the C.C. Wang Professor of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital. She led pediatric radiation oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Children’s Hospital Boston. Dr. Tarbell was the founding director of the Office for Women’s Careers and the Center for Faculty Development at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Tarbell is an internationally recognized expert in pediatric oncology and, in particular, pediatric brain tumors. Consistently listed in The Best Doctors in America (Woodward/White), Dr. Tarbell serves on the national Children’s Oncology Group Brain Tumor Committee and she was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies in 2002. More recently, Dr. Tarbell was selected as the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Gold Medalist in 2014 and was chosen as the 2017 winner of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award by the American Association for Women Radiologists (AAWR). She is co-editor of Pediatric Radiation Oncology, now in its 6th edition and she has authored more than 300 original publications and book chapters. Dr. Tarbell is a longstanding advocate for faculty development initiatives including mentoring programs for junior faculty and numerous efforts on behalf of women and minorities. In 2009, Dr. Tarbell led the HMS-wide Task Force on Faculty Development and Diversity and she continues to prioritize these issues. She received the Women in Medicine and Science Leadership Development Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges in 2014.

**Ruth Blumfeld Kundsin, ScD**   
**Harvard Medical School Award Honoree**

Ruth Kundsin, ScD is Associate Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Emerita. She was an early voice on women’s careers in academic medicine and edited “Women &amp; Success: The Anatomy of Achievement,” a compilation of papers from a conference that she co-chaired for the New York Academy of Sciences in 1973. Her publications include work as early as 1957 on contamination in the hospital environment studying pathogens on hospital floors, surgical gloves, and other sites. She was the hospital epidemiologist at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital from 1970-1982. She also published books on architectural design and indoor pollution, the impact of sexually transmitted infection on the fetus, and a book on airborne contagion.

**Jeffrey S. Flier, MD**  
**Harvard Medical School Award Honoree**

Jeffrey S. Flier became the 21st Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard University on September 1, 2007. His term as Dean ended in 2016 after nine years. Flier, an endocrinologist and an authority on the molecular causes of obesity and diabetes, had previously served as Harvard Medical School Faculty Dean for Academic Programs and Chief Academic Officer for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard teaching affiliate. Flier is one of the country’s leading investigators in the areas of obesity and diabetes. His research has produced major insights into the molecular mechanism of insulin action, the molecular mechanisms of insulin resistance in human disease, and the molecular pathophysiology of obesity. An elected member of the Institute of Medicine and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, his honors also include the Eli Lilly Award of the American Diabetes Association, the Berson Lecture of the American Physiological Society, and honorary doctorates from the University of Athens and the University of Edinburgh. He was the recipient of the 2003 Edwin B. Astwood Lecture Award from the Endocrine Society and, in 2005, he received the Banting Medal from the American Diabetes Association, its highest scientific honor.

**Isaac Schiff, MD**  
**Harvard Medical School Award Honoree**

Dr. Schiff is the Joe Vincent Meigs Distinguished Professor of Gynecology at Harvard Medical School. He did his Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Boston Hospital for Women (now Brigham and Women’s Hospital) and a Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at the same institution. He was the Director of Reproductive Endocrinology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital before being selected to head the Vincent Obstetrics and Gynecology Service at Massachusetts General Hospital which he led from 1988 to 2015. He is past President of the North American Menopause Society and Editor-in-Chief of its journal, Menopause. In addition, he chairs the Medical Advisory Board for Pause, the consumer magazine for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

**S. Jean Emans, MD**  
**Harvard Medical School Award Honoree**

Dr. Emans is Chief of the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine and Robert Masland Jr. Chair in Adolescent Medicine at the Boston Children’s Hospital. She has served as President of the North American Society of Pediatrics and Adolescent Gynecology and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine. She is the Program Director of the Boston Children’s Hospital Leadership Education in Adolescent Health (LEAH) Training Program, one of seven Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB/HRSA) funded LEAH programs in the United States. She was a member of the first Sub-board of Adolescent Medicine of the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Internal Medicine and continues her work on three committees of the American Board of Pediatrics. She is the author of several textbooks, including Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, co-author of multiple websites, including [www.pedicases.org](http://www.pedicases.org), www. youngwomenshealth.org,[www.youngmenshealthsite.org](http://www.youngmenshealthsite.org), and [www.bostonleah.org](http://www.bostonleah.org), a three-volume Bright Futures Case Studies for primary care clinicians, and more than 100 articles. She is the recipient of the 2009 William Silen Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award from Harvard Medical School and the 2011 Outstanding Achievement in Adolescent Medicine Award from the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine.
